Description
The Multiple Mirror Telescope adaptive secondary is the first operative adaptive secondary ever built, providing for the first time the adaptive optics correction on a main component – the secondary mirror – of the telescope optical train. The 6.5m telescope is located on the summit of Mt. Hopkins, in southern Arizona, and is managed by the University of Arizona.The adaptive secondary replaces the f/15 secondary mirror and has a diameter of 0.64 m, controlled by 336 contactless actuators.
microgate responsibilities
Microgate designed the control system and, more specifically the dedicated electronics, based on a cluster of 168 fixed-point DSPs. The integration of the system and the electromechanical tests were performed at Microgate in 2000, validating the system dynamic and static performances. We also contributed to the first commissioning at Steward Observatory (University of Arizona), where the system was optically calibrated to be finally installed at the telescope in 2002.
