Agility

Key quality in situational sports

Training

Introduction

Agility is the ability to rapidly change direction, position and pace with control and effectiveness, responding to unpredictable stimuli.

It is not just speed. It is a complex ability that integrates reaction times, coordination, balance, power and decision-making, all in fractions of a second. An agile athlete quickly reads what is happening around them, processes information and positions the body at the optimal point, maintaining control and balance even in the most critical situations.

This ability is crucial in situational sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, rugby, tennis or fencing, where stimuli and conditions change constantly and every decision counts.

Despite its importance, agility is still among the least structured qualities in training. Training it effectively requires an integrated approach that engages both the physical and cognitive components.

GykoPro, OptoJump Next and the Witty systems were designed for exactly this: testing and training every aspect of agility through stimuli and methodologies that integrate with each other for a more complete approach.

Examples of configurations:
flexible and customizable

Agility combines speed, control and decision-making in unpredictable situations. To develop it, it is useful to work both on individual elements and on their integration into complex tasks. Here are some proposals to objectify and stimulate perceptual and cognitive speed, changes of direction and explosive power.

Configuration 1

Perceptual-Cognitive Speed

The development of perceptual and cognitive speed integrates BrainHQ exercises with the use of Witty SEM, combining visual and cognitive stimuli with motor responses. The work trains attention, reaction times and decision-making in dynamic contexts, creating functional cognitive-motor training for the athlete.

Configuration 2

Change of Direction

Changes of direction are assessed with standardised tests (Illinois Agility Test, 5-0-5, T-Test), measuring times and precision via timing gates. The random component is introduced by Witty SEM, which provides random directional stimuli, training speed, technique, quick reading and reaction ability in unpredictable situations.

Configuration 3

Power and Strength

Jumps, plyometrics and reactive strength tests allow measuring and developing explosive power. The integration of GykoPro and OptoJump Next with VBT protocols allows monitoring load, velocity and movement quality, optimising training in a targeted manner.

Products suited for this field of application

Microgate supports agility development with integrated solutions: Witty Timing to measure speed in all its components, Witty SEM for adapted cognitive-motor training and random changes of direction, GykoPro for the assessment of basic motor functions and OptoJump Next for functional and technique analysis.
